A few days back, a report claimed that the Apple iPhone 6s and the 6s Plus could see an upgrade in camera resolution from 8MP to 12MP. Today, an analyst has seemingly confirmed the report but also shared a slightly disappointing new info as well.

Kevin Wang, Technology Research Director at IHS has confirmed that the two new iPhones this year will indeed see a bump in camera resolution from 8MP to 12MP. However, the upgrade in resolution will come at the cost of pixel size. This means the iPhone 6s/6s Plus camera could have a pixel size lower than 1.5 microns. The very first iPhone model with an 8MP camera, iPhone 4s, has a pixel size of 1.4 microns. All the newer models such as the iPhone 5s and the iPhone 6 duo have a pixel size of 1.5 microns.

One of the reasons why iPhones have managed to impress with their camera performance despite the lower resolution is the higher pixel size. Most rival Android smartphones have a much lower pixel size of around 1.12 microns. That said, pixel size isn’t everything, as has been demonstrated by the highly capable cameras on the Samsung Galaxy S6/Edge and the LG G4.
